Restructuring

Dongdaemun, Seoul

The original building hosts a shoe market encroaching on the outside as well as the housing of its traders. The seemingly chic appearance actually uses inexpensive means. For example, extensions increase the surface area while remaining small enough not to have to reinforce the structure. Vegetation grows extensively on a light net.

The other intention was to make circulation more fluid by opening the ground floor and removing partitions on the upper floors. It seemed essential to connect the projects to the surrounding buildings whose trade is linked, which would otherwise destroy their microsystem. Walkways link the building and its neighbors on all floors.
